Just in time for Halloween, Wild Hare Productions, Inc. will be producing the goriest of all Shakespearean tragedies.  By S. Clarke Hulse’s count, Titus Andronicus is a play with “14 killings, 9 of them on stage, 6 severed members, 1 rape (or 2 or 3, depending on how you count), 1 live burial, 1 case of insanity and 1 of cannibalism–an average of 5.2 atrocities per act, or one for every 97 lines.” Reviewer Mike Gene Wallace adds, “This is a great play. We’re talking fourteen dead bodies, kung-fu, sword-fu, spear-fu, dagger-fu, arrow-fu, pie-fu, animal screams, heads roll, hands roll, tongues roll, nine and a half quarts of blood, and a record-breaking 94 on the vomit meter.” Really, there’s not much more to say; that is the essence of the play. “Titus Andronicus” is a non-stop potboiler catalog of abominations.”

That said, why in the world do this little produced Shakespearean Tragedy? For some it is considered the worst of his writing, only because it is immature (written probably when he was only 26 and the first of his tragedies). It was not produced until almost 100 years later to an extremely favorable reception, mostly because of its goriness and because its theme was relevant in England in the late 17th Century!

Set somewhat in late Roman times, Titus Andronicus asks us questions about power, hierarchical oppression, and to what extent one will go to seek revenge. There is lots of action, lots of swordplay, lots of combat, and lots of gore. Standing in the middle of this is the most important question of all….who remains the figure of integrity and where do you stand in the midst of it all when we look at our global political climate today? What does revenge do to our soul? Can we stop it?

This won’t be so gory you can’t look, this won’t be an attack on any one political country nor figure, this WILL be a beautiful, physical theatre production that will entertain, make us think, and come away with a renewed sense of hope for our planet.
